За некоторыми глаголами идет либо герундий, либо существительное + инфинитив. Значение одинаковое:
advise | I advised seeing a doctor. | I advised them to see a doctor. |
allow | Ireland doesn't allow smoking in bars. | Ireland doesn't allow people to smoke in bars. |
encourage | He encourages eating healthy foods. | He encourages his patients to eat healthy foods. |
permit | Norway doesn't permit fishing without a fishing license. | Norway doesn't permit people to fish without a fishing license. |
recommend | I wouldn't recommend arguing with him about football. | I wouldn't recommend anybody to argue with him about football. |
require | The certificate requires completing two courses. | The certificate requires students to complete two courses. |
urge | They urge recycling bottles and paper. | They urge citizens to recycle bottles and paper. |
За некоторыми глаголами идет либо герундий, либо инфинитив с небольшим различием в значении:
Различие заключается в том, что когда мы используем герундий, мы говорим о реальной ситуации или действии.
В случае инфинитива мы имееем в виду возможную ситуацию или действие.
can't bear | He can't bear being alone. | He can't bear to be alone. |
can't stand | Nancy can't stand working the late shift. | Nancy can't stand to work the late shift. |
cease | The government ceased providing free health care. | The government ceased to provide free health care. |
continue | She continued talking. | She continued to talk. |
hate | He hates cleaning dishes. | He hates to clean dishes. |
like | I like living in a quiet place by the sea. | I like to live in a quiet place by the sea whenever I am in Tenerife. |
love | We love scuba diving. | We love to scuba dive. |
neglect | He neglected doing his daily chores. | He neglected to do his daily chores. |
prefer | He prefers eating at 7 PM. | He prefers to eat at 7 PM. |
propose | Andrew proposed paying for the trip. | Andrew proposed to pay for the trip. |
Со следующими глаголами имеется значительное различие в значении:
forget | |
I forget doing something = I forget that I have done something. |
I forget to do something = I forget that I need to do something. |
She forgot reading the poem when she was yung. |
She forgot to pay the rent this month. |
go on | |
Go on doing something = continue doing it without interruption. | Go on to do something = do or say something new. |
The director paused for a moment and then went on talking. We need to change. We can't go on living like this. |
After discussing the economic situation, the director then went on to talk about discipline. |
help | |
I can't help doing something = I can't stop myself doing it: | You can say "help to do" or "help do" (with or without to): |
Mary tried to be serious, but she couldn't help laughing. I'm sorry I'm so nervous. I can't help it. |
Everybody helped to clean up after the party. or Everybody helped clean up after the party. Can you help me to move this table? or Can you help me move this table? |

I remember doing something = I did it and I know about it. You remember doing something after you've done it. |
I remembered to do something = I remembered that I had to do it. so I did it. You remember to do something before do it. |
I know I locked the door. I clearly remember locking it. He could remember driving along the road before traffic light, but he couldn't remember anything else. |
I remembered to lock the door, but I forgot to switch off the light. Please remember to post the letter. |
regret | |
I regret doing something = I did something and I'm sorry about it. | I regret to say/tell/inform you = I'm sorry that I have to say (etc.). |
It began to get cold and he regretted no wearing his coat. I regretted being late to the interview. |
We regret to inform you that we have to refuse you. I regret to tell you that our house burnt down. |
stop | |
Stop doing something = Discontinue doing it. | Stop to do something = Stop by the reason to do something. |

Try doing something = try or experiment with different methods to see if something works. | Try to do something = you want to do it, but you do not succeed in doing it. |

После некоторых глаголов можно употребить конструкцию: вопросительное слово +
инфинитив ... . Мы используем такую структуру после таких глаголоов как:
know, understand, ask, decide, remember, forget, explain, learn, wonder:
We asked how to get to the station.
Have you already decided where to invest money?
Do you understand what to do?
Есть глаголы, после которых идет только инфинитив или существительное с инфинитивом.
Есть глаголы, после которых идет только герундий.
